The May lily of the valley (convallaria majalis), is aspecies of perennial herbaceous plants from temperate regions whose spring flowers, small and white, form clusters of very fragrant bells.
We trace the tradition of lily of the valley of May 1st to the Renaissance, Charles IX having offered it around him in 1561 as a lucky charm. During the Belle Époque, the great French couturiers offered a touch of lily of the valley to their little hands and their customers on May 1st. Christian Dior makes it the emblem of his Fashion House. From then on, this custom of May 1st becomes a celebration in France.
