How to care for your Kokedama

Kokedama sur notre ESHOP»

Kokedama, "moss balls" on which a plant thrives, appeared in Japan in the early 1990s. This unique way of displaying plants highlights them, and the moss gives the arrangement a very natural look.

It is important to provide a suitable environment (light, no drafts, temperature, humidity, etc.) for the Kokedama, depending on the plant used. Kokedama do not tolerate direct sunlight or air conditioning well, so these conditions should be avoided.

As for watering, it should be adjusted according to the season and humidity. To know when to water, rely on the moss. It is the best indicator: if it is moist, the soil inside is also moist. In this case, there is no need to water. However, if it is dry, you should water. A quick daily check ensures your Kokedama is properly hydrated.

There are several ways to water your Kokedama. We recommend soaking it. Immerse the sphere approximately every week from October to April and every two or three days from May to September, or even more frequently. Remove the Kokedama after about ten minutes, as soon as no more air bubbles rise. The water should be at room temperature, low in minerals, and chlorine-free.

Over time, the soil in your Kokedama will become depleted. You will then need to provide the plant with the necessary nutrients. Approximately 5 or 6 months after creating your Kokedama, fertilize it by diluting a small dose of orchid fertilizer in the watering can. Repeat this every 15 days.
